Appeal a gun or ammunition background check

State law provides that a potential buyer of a firearm or ammunition must pass a background check before completing the purchase.  The background check is conducted by the New York State Police.  A potential buyer whose background check is denied, after receiving the reason for the denial from the State Police, may administratively appeal the denial to the Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG).

Administrative appeals may be submitted to the OAG by email to Background.Check@ag.ny.gov.
